Enhance Your Teaching to Impact Student Learning

Presenters

Members from the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT)

If there is one thing you want to try or to change in your teaching, what would it be?Ìý Maybe there is an approach you want to incorporate to enhance student engagement, a new assessment you would like to design, or an idea for a learning activity that you want to create. ÌýSometimes just changing one thing can have a significant impact on students’ learning.Ìý

Join CLT staff for an interactive session to consider what your one change will be this year!Ìý We will begin with stories and practical insights from faculty who have made one change in their teaching. Participants will then discuss ideas they may have for their own upcoming courses in a collaborative environment, hear from others, and learn about the supports offered by the Centre for Learning and Teaching to assist in your teaching development now and throughout your career at ҹɫÊÓƵ.

The session will conclude with short discussions about three specific teaching and learning topics:

  • Generative Artificial Intelligence
  • Student Learning Experience Questionnaires (SLEQ)

Be You, Be Well, Belong: Fostering Thriving Teaching Communities

Facilitators

Raghav Sampangi, University Teaching Fellow, Faculty of Computer Science
Jen Frail-Gauthier, Senior Instructor,ÌýDepartment of Biology

In this interactive session, we’ll explore how a strong teaching community supports both educator well-being and student belonging. You’ll leave with practical strategies, meaningful peer connections, and ideas for embedding belonging into your teaching and supervision.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will:

  1. Define Belonging for Yourself: Reflect on and articulate your personal understanding of belonging—and why it matters in teaching and learning.
  2. Articulate Your Role in Belonging: Identify at least two concrete ways to nurture belonging—for your students and for yourself—in your teaching practice.
  3. Generate Actionable Strategies: Co-create some ready-to-use approaches (ice-breakers, inclusive syllabus language, check-ins, etc.) that foster welcome and support in the classroom.
  4. Build Peer Connections: Engage in small-group conversations to uncover shared experiences, foster social support, and strengthen your network of fellow educators.
  5. Commit to Next Steps: Pinpoint one specific changes you’ll introduce in your upcoming teaching or orientation session to strengthen community and well-being.

Why This Matters

Belonging is the foundation of a thriving academic environment. When educators feel supported and connected, they bring their best selves to teaching and that energy ripples out to every student. In this session, we’ll challenge assumptions, share what’s worked, and hold each other accountable to build communities where everyone can flourish.
